Van Andel, DeVos families creating Michigan’s first MLS NEXT Pro soccer team
GRAND RAPIDS, MI – When Amway Stadium will open in 2027 In downtown Grand Rapids, it will host matches for Michigan's premier soccer team, MLS NEXT Pro.
The league that will name the 8,500-seat stadium was announced Monday by members of the Van Andel and DeVos families, who will co-own the new team.
“This is not only a milestone for soccer in our city but a testament to our community’s unwavering passion and dedication to professional sports,” said David Van Andel. “Sport has the unique ability to bring communities together, build community spirit, ultimately boost the local economy and create vibrant spaces for fans to come together. We are delighted to offer fans the opportunity to experience top-class football talent right here at home.”
The name of the team, tentatively called West Michigan Soccer, and more details about its roster, coaching staff and colors are expected to be announced next year.
MLS NEXT Pro features 27 MLS affiliate clubs and 2 independent clubs.
The $175 million Amway Stadium is planned for a 7-acre site adjacent to US 131 and the David D. Hunting YMCA on Lake Michigan Drive NW. Construction is expected to begin early next year, and the site is expected to be completed by spring 2027.
Other cities with MLS NEXT Pro teams include Atlanta, Georgia; Chattanooga, Tennessee; Orlando, Florida; and St. Louis, Missouri.
