Ben Augee becomes fifth Zag drafted to MLS
Gonzaga midfielder Ben Augee was selected by FC Cincinnati with the 80th pick in the third round of the 2024 MLS SuperDraft Friday afternoon, marking the end of the junior’s career as a Zag. Augee becomes the fifth player in GU history to be drafted by an MLS club.
In his third season at GU, Augee led the team in scoring, totaling five goals and three assists. The Tualatin, Oregon native started all 18 games in 2023, contributing two goals and an assist.
“Ben has been great for us here at Gonzaga,” said former GU head football coach Aaron Lewis, who resigned from the program after the 2024 season to join the nonprofit Youth Football Project from Spokane, 90+. “His work ethic and commitment to his goals was consistent every day he was here. This mindset combined with his natural talents puts him in a great position to succeed even at the professional level. »
Augee stood out for his efficiency, as half of his 14 shots on goal found the back of the net during the 2024 campaign. His most notable goal was the game-winner against No. 9 Seattle, which ensured GU’s first victory over a top 10 opponent since 2007. The performance earned him West Coast Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors.
He finished the season as All-WCC honorable mention and played a full 90 minutes in all but one conference game, logging 84 minutes in a game at Oregon State.
Thanks to FC Cincinnati trading its top two picks, Augee became the team’s first selection in 2024. Cincinnati finished the 2023 season with an 18-5-11 record.
