Sherwood Hits Career-High with Hat Trick in 3-1 Win Over Avalanche
Kiefer Sherwood scored the first hat-trick of his career. Fans threw their hats onto the ice and “Kiefer Sherwood” chants echoed throughout Rogers Arena. Sherwood said he hadn't scored a hat trick since his days in the AHL, and getting his first NHL goal was different.
“This is a very special honor, one I've been trying to embrace. I really appreciate the support from the fans. Their passion is something Vancouver is known for, and it was pretty cool, I'll definitely remember it,” Sherwood said.
Sherwood has scored 11 goals this season, a career-high — his previous career-high was 10 with the Nashville Predators last season.
“I'm just grateful for all the opportunities. Everyone's journey is a little different. For me, I'm grateful for every day, and just trying to earn the next day and play the game the right way. I feel like when you do that, the good things take care of themselves,” Sherwood said.
Head coach Rick Tocchet recounted a conversation with Sherwood last summer while Sherwood was on his way to shooting practice and told the Canucks' bench boss that he was being attacked in his game.
“It is,” said Touchet. “He's obviously an aggressive guy, and he's the guy you need on the ice who gives us the juice.”
Touchette praised all four of his lines and said the defense was solid against a tough Colorado team.
“These guys are a resilient group, we rarely get a bunch of unpleasant people together, so I give them a lot of credit. So, all credit to the players tonight,” Touchette said.
Thatcher Demko had multiple sequences where he blocked multiple shots and clubbed him, deflecting 30 of the 31 shots he faced aside.
“It was a big experience for me,” Demko said. “I definitely don't like to go 0-3 in my first three games. So it was a good game.”
